The Effect of Gamma Ray Radiation on the Growth and Production of Several Varieties of Soybeans (Glycine Max L.) In Generation M1

Introduction

The increasing demand for food and vegetable protein sources has led to the need for innovative methods to improve crop yields. One such method is the use of gamma ray radiation to enhance plant growth and production. This study aims to investigate the effect of gamma ray radiation on the growth and production of several soybean varieties (Glycine max L. Merril) in generation M1. The study was conducted on the Research Land of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra in Medan, from September to December 2008.

Materials and Methods

The study used a random group design (RAK) with two factors and three replications. The main factors in this study were gamma ray radiation doses with three levels, namely R1 (20 Krad), R2 (30 Krad), and R0 as control. The second factor was the soybean varieties tested, namely Kerinci, Seulawah, and Baluran. The study was conducted on the Research Land of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra in Medan, from September to December 2008.

Results

The results of this study showed that there were significant differences between varieties in several plant growth parameters. Two weeks after planting (MST), the Baluran variety (V3) showed the plant height of 11.74 cm. At the age of four MST, the height of the plant of the same variety increased to 30.47 cm, and at six MST reaching 53.16 cm. The climax, at eight MST, the Kerinci variety (V1) showed the plant height of 76.58 cm.

In the case of the number of books (8 MST), the Seulawah variety (V2) showed the best results with a total of 16.00 books. The highest flowering age was also achieved by the Seulawah variety (V2) at the age of 22.00 days, while the highest harvest age in the same variety reached 14.22 days. In addition, the Seulawah variety also showed the highest number of branches per plant (21.56 branches) and the number of pods per plant (676.83 pods). The weight of 100 best seeds was achieved by Baluran varieties (V3) with a weight of 20.61 grams.

Gamma ray radiation also had a significant effect on plant growth. The radiation dose R2 (30 krad) produced a plant height of 24.92 cm at four MST, 46.38 cm at six MST, and 65.64 cm at eight MST. In addition, the dose of R1 (20 krad) showed a significant increase in the number of books in all observed growth phases.

Analysis of Interactions between Varieties of Treatment and Radiation Doses

This shows that each soybean variety reacts differently to gamma ray radiation, but the radiation can increase growth and production without having to depend on the combination of certain varieties.

Overall, the results of this study indicate that gamma ray radiation can increase soybean growth and production. The higher the radiation dose given, the greater the effect on plant growth.
