Introduction

The coffee industry is a significant contributor to the economy of many countries, including Indonesia. In the Sipirok District, South Tapanuli Regency, coffee farming is a major source of income for many families. However, the income of coffee farmers in this area is influenced by various factors, including land productivity, coffee selling prices, fertilizer costs, and seed costs. This study aims to analyze the factors that affect the income level of coffee farmers in Parau Sorat Village, Sipirok District, South Tapanuli Regency, and to identify the added value of coffee processing.

Methodology

This study used a case study approach, focusing on coffee farmers in Parau Sorat Village, Sipirok District, South Tapanuli Regency. The data was collected through a survey, and the analysis was conducted using multiple linear regression. The added value of coffee processing was calculated using the Hayami method.

Coffee Farming Revenue

The results of this study showed that coffee farming in the Sipirok area is very profitable. The average income received by each farmer reaches Rp 4,718,875, and income per hectare can reach Rp 13,040,903.28. This figure reflects the great potential possessed by the coffee agriculture sector in the Sipirok area. It also shows that with good management, coffee farmers can achieve proper income.

Factors Affecting Revenue

Analysis of the factors that influence the income of coffee farmers revealed that there are several variables that have a significant influence. Among these are land productivity, coffee selling prices, fertilizer costs, and seed costs. All of these variables contribute to determining how much income earned by farmers.

Land Productivity

The higher the productivity of the land, the more coffee yields that can be harvested, which has a positive impact on income. This is because higher productivity means that farmers can produce more coffee, which can be sold at a higher price, resulting in increased income.

Coffee Selling Price

A good price on the market will increase farmers' income directly. This is because a higher selling price means that farmers can earn more money from the sale of their coffee, resulting in increased income.

Fertilizer Costs and Seed Costs

Expenditures for these costs must be taken into account, because it will affect the net profit of farmers. This is because fertilizer and seed costs are necessary expenses for coffee farming, and if not managed properly, can reduce the net profit of farmers.

However, interestingly, this research found that farming experience and farmer education level had no significant effect on income. This shows that although education and experience factors are considered important, in this context, the success of income is more influenced by technical and economic factors.

The Added Value of Coffee Processing

In addition, the analysis also shows a significant added value from the processing of coffee beans into ground coffee. The added value obtained reached Rp 12,567.76 per kilogram, with a value added ratio of 35%. That is, 35% of the total output value of ground coffee is an additional value produced from the processing. This indicates a greater profit potential for farmers who carry out product processing, not just relying on coffee sales in the form of seeds.

Conclusion

Overall, this research provides in-depth insight into the income of coffee farmers in Sipirok, identifying key factors that affect income and highlight the importance of processing in increasing added value. This discovery is not only beneficial for local farmers, but can also be a reference for stakeholders in formulating policies that support the improvement of the welfare of coffee farmers in the area. Therefore, the development of coffee processing training and technology can be a strategic step to increase farmers' income and the sustainability of coffee farming in Sipirok District.
