Introduction

Essential oils have been widely used in various industries, including the health and cosmetics sectors, due to their unique properties and benefits. The Sembung root essential oil was isolated from the roots of the Blumea Balsamifera DC plant using the hydrodistillation method. The antimicrobial activity of the oil was evaluated using the agar disc diffusion method against four types of microbes, namely Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, and Candida Albicans. The antioxidant activity of the oil was evaluated using the DPPH method (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl).

Results

The results of the GC-MS analysis showed that the Sembung root essential oil contains 21 chemical compounds, of which 14 are the main components with content above 1%. The main components include Propane, 2-Ethoxy; 1,3,6-Octatriene, 3,7-Dimethyl (occimena); Thujopsen-13; Thymohydroquinone Dimethyl Ether; 2-Allyl-1,4-Dimethoxy-3-methyl-Benzene; Thymol; Neryl acetat; 1,5-Dimethyl-1-Vinil-4-Hexenyl-3-methil buttanoate; Geranyl Pentanoate; 5-oxatricyclo [8.2.0.0 (4,6)] Dodecane; 1,2-trimethyl-9-methylene; and Tridecane.

The antimicrobial test results showed that the Sembung root essential oil has significant activity against four types of microbes, namely Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, and Candida Albicans. This positive result indicates the potential of the essential oil as an antimicrobial agent that can be used in the treatment or prevention of infections caused by these microbes.

The antioxidant activity test results showed that the Sembung root essential oil has good antioxidant activity with a concentration of 12.1 ppm. This activity indicates that the essential oil from the Sembung root can function as a natural antioxidant source.
