Introduction

Palm oil (CPO) is one of the most widely traded oils in the world, and it is rich in α-tocopherol, a vital nutrient for human health. The content of tocoferol and toctrienol in CPO ranges from 600-1000 ppm, making it an attractive source for the production of these valuable compounds. However, the extraction of α-tocopherol from CPO is a complex process that requires the use of expensive and environmentally unfriendly methods. In this study, we aim to determine the optimal conditions, isothermic models, and kinetics models of α-tocopherol adsorption processes from CPO using activated carbon from tea waste.

Materials and Methods

The materials used in this study include CPO and activated carbon from tea waste, which was activated with H3PO4 and carbonized at 500 ° C. The parameters measured for activated carbon include surface area, ash content, and volatile substance levels. The adsorption process was carried out on the ratio of activated carbon mass to CPO, which was 1: 3; 1: 4; 1: 5; and 1: 6 at a temperature of 40 ° C and variations in the stirring speed of 140, 160, and 180 rpm. The α-tocopherol concentration was analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Results

The results of this study showed that the percentage of adsorption was greater at higher stirring speed and in the active carbon ratio of tea waste to lower CPO. In this study, the largest percentage of adsorption reached 84.42% achieved in the ratio of 1: 3 and the stirring speed of 180 rpm. Meanwhile, the maximum adsorption capacity reached 1,0973 mg/gram achieved in a ratio of 1: 6 and the stirring speed of 180 rpm. The suitable kinetics model for α-tocopherol adsorption is a pseudo-order two model with a correlation coefficient of 0.9934, while the appropriate isotherm model is a Langmuir isotherm model with a correlation coefficient of 0.927.

Discussion

This study shows that activated carbon from tea waste can be used as an effective adsorbent to absorb α-tocopherol from CPO. This opens new opportunities in the use of tea waste as raw materials in the industrial process. The use of activated carbon from tea waste as an adsorbent offers several advantages:
