Introduction

The study of salinity levels and land texture on paddy fields in Percut Village, Percut Sei Tuan District, Deli Serdang Regency, is a crucial aspect of understanding the condition of agricultural land in the region. The aim of this research is to obtain data related to the level of soil salinity and its distribution, which is essential for farmers and land managers to make informed decisions about land management. This study was conducted from May to September 2019, using a free grid survey method with a sampling density of one sample for every 25 hectares of land.

Methodology

The parameters measured in this study include soil salinity, which was measured using an electrical conductivity (DHL) meter, and soil texture, which was measured using the hydrometer method. The results of the analysis were categorized into three criteria based on the standards set by Dobberman and Fairhurst (2000). These criteria are low criteria with an area of 128 hectares (28%), moderate criteria with an area of 147 hectares (33%), and high criteria with an area of 175 hectares (39%).

Results and Discussion

The results of the study show that the spread of soil salinity in Percut Village paddy fields can be categorized into three criteria based on the standards set by Dobberman and Fairhurst (2000). The high level of salinity in most of the paddy fields in Percut Village is a concern, as it can potentially damage plants, reduce crop yields, and change the physical and chemical properties of the soil. Therefore, a good understanding of the level of salinity is very important for farmers and land managers to make appropriate decisions in land management.

The measurement of soil texture in the paddy fields shows that the dominance of the sand fraction makes the land in this region have sandy clay and sandy sand. Soil texture dominated by sand fractions can also affect the ability of the soil in storing water and nutrients. Sand-textured soil tends to have a low water retention capacity, making it more susceptible to drought. Therefore, farmers in this village are advised to consider water conservation methods and the selection of plant varieties that are more resistant to existing soil conditions.
