Introduction

Penitentiary institutions play a vital role in rehabilitating offenders and providing services to the community. However, the work environment in prisons can be a significant source of stress for employees. The interaction with prisoners who have challenging temperaments, the isolated atmosphere behind high walls, and limited employment opportunities in other places can trigger feelings of depression and anxiety. This study aims to investigate the relationship between working conditions and individual characteristics with work stress in Class II B Penitentiary employees in Lubuk Pakam, 2008.

Methodology

This study employed a cross-sectional research design, analyzing data from 86 prison employees. The data analysis was conducted using the chi-square method to determine the relationship between working conditions and individual characteristics with work stress. The study aimed to identify the factors that contribute to work stress in prison employees and provide recommendations for improving the work environment and reducing stress levels.

Results

The results of this study showed a significant relationship between working conditions and work stress (p < 0.05). This indicates that the working conditions in prisons significantly affect the stress levels experienced by employees. Furthermore, the study found a significant relationship between tenure and work stress, suggesting that the longer an employee serves, the more likely they are to experience work stress. However, individual characteristics such as age, marital status, and education did not show significant relationships with work stress.
