Introduction

Catfish farming (Clarias Gariepinus) has emerged as a promising agricultural commodity in Indonesia, particularly in Wonorejo Village, Pematang Bandar District, Simalungun Regency. This study aims to investigate the catfish cultivation system, assess its financial feasibility, and explore the income earned by farmers from this business. Additionally, this research seeks to understand the impact of socioeconomic characteristics, such as age, education, length of cultivation, number of dependents, and pond area, on farmers' income.

Background

Catfish farming has gained popularity in recent years due to its potential for high returns and relatively low investment costs. The demand for catfish is increasing in the market, making it an attractive business opportunity for farmers. However, the success of catfish farming depends on various factors, including the quality of catfish seeds, feeding techniques, and pond management. This study aims to provide insights into the catfish cultivation system and its financial feasibility, which can help farmers and policymakers make informed decisions.

Methodology

This study employed a purposive sampling method, where 30 farmers involved in catfish seedlings were chosen as samples. The observation process started from the selection of parent fish, spawning, sorting, feeding, to harvesting catfish seeds that have been 40 days old. Various data analysis methods were used, including descriptive, income analysis, feasibility analysis, and multiple linear regression.

Research Result

The results showed that the catfish seed cultivation system includes several structured stages. From the good selection process, successful spawning, to the appropriate feeding technique, all these elements contribute to favorable harvests. The feasibility analysis revealed that the value of R/C (Revenue Cost) is obtained by more than 1, indicating that this cultivation business is feasible to be developed because it provides significant benefits above the City Minimum Wage (UMK).

In terms of income, farmers involved in this cultivation get high results, more than the average income earned from other agricultural sectors. This shows that the cultivation of catfish seeds is not only beneficial in terms of financial, but also has the potential to improve the welfare of farmers in the region.

Effect of Socio-Economic Characteristics

Analysis of the socioeconomic characteristics of farmers revealed that aspects such as education, length of cultivation, number of dependents, and pond area had a significant influence on income. In particular, farmers with a higher level of education tend to be better able to manage their business better. In addition, the length of experience in catfish farming also contributes to the ability of farmers to optimize the production process.

However, it should be noted that when analyzed simultaneously, all socioeconomic characteristics that are considered indicate a mutually supportive influence on farmers' income. This shows that the interaction between various factors is very important in determining the success of the catfish cultivation business.

Conclusion

From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the cultivation of catfish seedlings in Wonorejo Village is not only financially feasible, but also has a positive impact on farmers' income. Socio-economic characteristics are an important factor that affects the success of this business. Therefore, increasing the education and experience of farmers, as well as the development of a more efficient cultivation system can be a strategy to increase productivity and income in this sector.

In the context of local economic growth, catfish cultivation is one of the effective solutions to improve the welfare of the community, given the demand for catfish that continues to increase in the market. With good management and support from the government and related institutions, this cultivation business has the potential to develop further and provide broader benefits for the community.
