Introduction

Student satisfaction is a crucial indicator in assessing the quality of higher education institutions, including the learning methods used. In the Nursing Study Program of the College of Health Sciences in Medan, two learning methods are being used: Problem Based Learning (PBL) and conventional methods. This study aims to compare the student satisfaction between these two methods, providing valuable insights for educational institutions to improve their learning management.

Problem Based Learning (PBL) is a learning approach that focuses on using problems as a stimulus for students to develop knowledge relevant to the health profession. This method encourages students to be more active in the learning process, hone communication skills, and develop independent learning skills. On the other hand, conventional methods are one-way learning systems, where lecturers play a more dominant role. Although this method is commonly used, the effectiveness of learning in conventional methods is often considered lower than PBL.

Methodology

This study employed a comparative approach with a cross-sectional method to compare student satisfaction between PBL and conventional methods. The research population consisted of 87 level I students, divided into two groups: one group participated in PBL in the Nursing Study Program in Medan Haji Hospital, and the other group participated in conventional methods in the Flora Nursing Study Program. Sampling was carried out using a total sampling technique.

Results

The results showed that there was no significant difference in satisfaction between students using PBL and conventional methods, with a P value of 0.786. However, the majority of students who participated in PBL reported higher levels of satisfaction (88.7%) compared to students who followed conventional methods (85.3%). This indicates that although there are no significant differences, PBL tends to be better able to provide a better level of satisfaction.

Discussion

The success of the application of the PBL method depends on several key factors, including the ability to introduce this method well, preparation of effective problems, and the ability to form solid learning groups. Therefore, it is essential for educational institutions to improve PBL learning management through several strategic steps.

Better Socialization: Increasing socialization about the PBL learning process to new students, so that they understand and can adapt to this method quickly.
Increasing Teacher Competencies: Ensuring lecturers have adequate competence in compiling relevant and attractive problems, and able to arouse student motivation in learning.
Active Group Discussion: Encouraging students to be active in group discussions, so they can exchange ideas and knowledge, enrich learning experiences.

Conclusion

By applying these recommendations, it is hoped that the PBL method can be applied more effectively, providing a more pleasant learning experience, and ultimately increasing the satisfaction and quality of learning in the Nursing Study Program.

This study has several limitations, including the small sample size and the use of a cross-sectional method. Future studies should aim to increase the sample size and use a longitudinal method to provide more comprehensive insights into the effectiveness of PBL.
