Introduction

Rice is one of the most widely consumed staple foods globally, and its production is a crucial aspect of many economies. In Indonesia, rice is a significant crop, and its production is a vital component of the country's agricultural sector. The Batu Bara Regency, specifically the Air Hitam Village in the Datuk Limapuluh District, is an interesting research location for understanding the dynamics of lowland rice farming. This study aims to describe the productivity of lowland rice farming on various land management scales, analyze the factors that influence the production and income of paddy farms, and evaluate the level of farm business efficiency on each scale.

Methodology

This study uses a descriptive method, analysis of Cobb-Douglas production functions, multiple linear regression analysis, and business feasibility analysis using the R/C method. The data collected from the study includes information on the area of land, seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, labor, and other inputs used in rice farming. The analysis of Cobb-Douglas production functions helps to identify the factors that influence the production of rice fields, while multiple linear regression analysis is used to analyze the relationship between the factors and the production of rice fields. The business feasibility analysis using the R/C method helps to evaluate the level of farm business efficiency on each scale.

Results

The results of the analysis show that the factors that affect the production of rice fields simultaneously, both on small, medium, and large scales, have a real effect. Partially, the significant effect is only seen on the area of land and seeds. On the income side, production costs on each scale have a simultaneous real effect. However, partially, only a medium scale shows a real effect on the cost of renting land, seeds, and pesticides. Large scale shows a significant effect on land and seed rental costs. R/C analysis shows that the business of paddy rice farmers on medium scale has the highest level of efficiency.

Land Management Scale and Challenges

This study revealed that the scale of land management has an important role in determining the productivity and income of rice farming in Air Hitam Village. Medium scale, despite having limited access to capital and technology, is able to maximize the efficiency of resource use. This is evidenced by the results of R/C which shows the highest level of efficiency on this scale. On the other hand, a small scale faces access constraints to resources and technology, so that the effectiveness of its production is limited. Meanwhile, large scale, despite having better access, is still constrained by high production costs, especially for land rent and seeds.

Implications and Recommendations

The results of this study provide some important implications and recommendations for the development of lowland rice farming in Air Hitam Village:

Increasing Capital Access

Increased access to capital, both for small and large scale, needs serious attention. Funding that is easily accessible with the right scheme can encourage increased productivity and farm business income.

Utilization of Appropriate Technology

Utilization of appropriate technology, such as the use of superior varieties and efficient irrigation systems, can help improve production efficiency on all scales.

Institutional Strengthening

Strengthening of farmers' institutions, such as farmer groups or cooperatives, is very important to strengthen market access, get assistance, and increase farmers' bargaining power.

Small Scale Farmers' Empowerment

Special empowerment programs for small scale farmers are needed to improve their ability to manage farming. This can be done through training, counseling, and assistance.

Conclusion

This analysis shows that paddy farming in Air Hitam Village has great potential to be improved. By paying attention to the factors that influence production and income, as well as implementing the right strategy, lowland rice farming can be a stable and sustainable source of income for farmers.
