Introduction

The oral cavity plays a vital role in human life, serving as a gateway to taste the flavors of food. This ability to taste helps us identify poisonous substances and obtain the right nutrients. However, the perception of taste can be influenced by various factors, including psychological, physical, and memory factors, which can lead to changes in our ability to taste.

This study aims to investigate the relationship between the perception of taste and caries experience, as well as the debris index (an indicator of oral cleanliness), in children aged 12-13 years in Medan Selayang and Medan Polonia districts.

Methodology

This study employed a descriptive analytic cross-sectional approach, involving 152 children as research subjects. Data was collected through questionnaires and inspections. Dental caries examination was conducted using a Klein index, the perception of sweet taste with sucrose solution of various concentrations, the perception of bitter taste with a sheet of prop (6-n-Propylthiouracil), and the cleaning of the oral cavity with the debris index.

Results

The results showed a significant relationship between the perception of sweet and bitter taste and caries experience. Children with the supertaster category (very sensitive to taste), mediumtaster (sensitive to taste), and non-sensitive (not sensitive to taste) exhibited significant differences in caries experience.

However, this study found no significant relationship between the perception of sweet and bitter taste and the debris index. This indicates that the perception of taste is not related to the cleanliness of the oral cavity.

Discussion

This study concluded that the ability to taste sweet and bitter taste is related to caries experience. Children with high sensitivity tend to have higher caries experience compared to children with low sensitivity.

It is essential to note that this research only shows a relationship, not cause and effect. Further research is necessary to reveal the underlying factors of this relationship and find solutions to prevent dental caries in children, particularly those with high sensitivity.
