The Effect of a Combination of Core Core Palm Oil, Bran, Vegetable Garbage, and Fruit Garbage as Fed of Black Army Flies Larvae (Hermetia Illucens)

Introduction

Hermetia Illucens larvae, commonly known as Black Army Flies, play a vital role in decomposition and have the potential to be cultivated using various types of organic matter. These larvae are capable of converting organic waste into feed and useful organic fertilizer. This study aims to investigate the effect of feed treatment on the growth, survival rate, pupa weight, and decomposed feed analysis of H. Illucens larvae. The study was conducted at the Plant Disease Pest Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, Medan, from May to July 2023.

Methodology

The method used in this study is a Complete Non-Factorial Random Design (CRD) with five feed treatments and four replications. The study aimed to determine the effect of feed treatment on the growth, survival rate, pupa weight, and decomposed feed analysis of H. Illucens larvae. The results of this study will provide valuable insights into the cultivation of black army flying larvae and contribute to sustainable waste management.

Results

The results of this study showed that the treatment with 50G/repeat from the palm oil core meal produced the shortest growth period of H. Illucens, which was around 17-19 days, with a survival rate of 98.5%, and a pupa weight of 15g. These figures indicate that palm core cake has better potential compared to other feed treatments such as bran, vegetable waste, and fruit waste.

Nutritional Analysis of Decomposed Feed

The nutritional analysis of decomposed feed by H. Illucens larvae showed that feed treatment with a mixture of 12.5g palm core core, 12.5g bran, 12.5g vegetable waste, and 12.5g fruit waste meets the criteria as solid organic fertilizer, with a C/N ratio of 15.06%. This ratio shows a good balance between carbon and nitrogen, which is very important for the optimal decomposition process. In addition, feed treatment with 25g of bran produces the highest P2O5 and K2O content, respectively 3.11% and 3.20%.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that the right combination of feed has a significant effect on the growth and survival of H. Illucens larvae. This shows the great potential for the use of organic waste as a source of feed and fertilizer, as well as its contribution to sustainable waste management. This study not only provides insight into the cultivation of black army flying larvae, but can also be the first step to utilize agricultural waste and household waste efficiently, support agricultural practices that are more environmentally friendly and sustainable.
