Reveping the Secret of Phosphate Solvent Microbes to Increase Corn Growth in Ultisol Lands of Mancang

Phosphate solvent microbes have been widely used as a potential solution to increase crop growth, particularly in ultisol lands where phosphate availability is limited. This study aimed to investigate the effect of various doses and inoculation time as well as the type of inoculum of phosphate solvent microbes on the growth of corn plants (Zea mays L.) in ultisol lands of Mancang.

Methodology

This study was conducted in a greenhouse, central laboratory, and biology laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, Medan, from April to June 2006. A random group design with 3 factors and 3 replications was used. The first factor was the inoculant dose (D), which was 10 ml (DL), 20 ml (D2), and 30 ml (D3). The second factor was the time of inoculation (W), namely when planting (WL), one week after planting, and two weeks after planting. The third factor was the type of inoculant (J), namely bacteria (JL) and Fungi (J2).

Results

The results showed that the inoculant dose had a significant effect on the availability of P and the number of phosphate solvent microbes (PSM), but had no significant effect on the dry weight of the canopy, the dry weight of the root, and the absorption of P. The inoculation time had a significant effect on the absorption of P, but did not have a significant effect on the dry weight of the canopy, the dry weight of the roots, the availability of P, and the number of PSM. The type of inoculant had a significant effect on the number of PSM, but did not have a significant effect on the dry weight of the canopy, the dry weight of the roots, the availability of P, and the absorption of P.
