Introduction

Housing is a significant source of domestic wastewater, which often pollutes the environment. This wastewater enters the body of water through small canals and over time, can exceed the capacity of the body of water to overcome it. One solution to overcome these pollution is to use phytoremediation techniques that use aquatic plants. Research Methodology

The method used in this study is experimental with an experimental quasi design. Three types of aquatic plants, namely wlingen (Scirpus grossus), kiapu (Pistia stratiotes), and lotus (Nymphea Firecrest), are used to process household liquid waste from the new Bermbin Earth housing in Binjai. The parameters of pollution measured include TSS (Total Suspended Solids), PH, BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand), nitrite, and sulfate, before and after treatment. The experiment was carried out in 12 pots with a diameter of 58 cm, each containing 12 liters of household liquid waste. As a control, pots without plants are also provided. Data processing is carried out by analysis of one-way variance (ANOVA) and BNT test (the smallest real difference).

Research Result

The results showed that household waste before treatment was still below the standard domestic wastewater quality in accordance with PP No. 82 of 2001, except for nitrite which contains 0.2982 mg/l, exceeding the specified limit (0.06 mg/l). Lotus plants are proven to be the most effective, able to reduce up to 90.64% TSS, 6.31% PH, 59.35% BOD, 22.77% nitrite, and 23.43% sulfate. On the other hand, Wlingen was able to reduce up to 83.04% TSS, 13.12% PH, 58.23% BOD, 48.32% nitrite, and 11.76% sulfate, while Kiapu managed to reduce up to 89.47% TSS, 6.19% pH, 40.89% BOD, 41.72% nitrite, and 13.24% sulfate.

Analysis of Results

All types of plants significantly reduce TSS, PH, BOD, and sulfate levels with very low P values, show significant results. However, for nitrite, the P value does not show significant effect. The LSD test shows that the lotus is superior to Wlingen and Kiapu in reducing TSS, BOD, and sulfate, even though TSS in control is lower due to the absence of residual plants or other suspended solid sources.

From the results of this study, it is recommended to choose the right aquatic plants as an effort to improve the quality of household waste around housing. The use of plants such as lotus, wlingen, and kiapu is not only beneficial in terms of waste treatment, but also provides aesthetic and economic value for the environment. The implementation of phytoremediation through this plant is expected to be an effective and environmentally friendly alternative in overcoming the problem of domestic wastewater pollution.
