The Effect of Providing Various Sources of Biochar and Kieserit Fertilizer on the Growth and Production of Shallots (Allium ascalonicum L.) in Paddy Fields

Introduction

Shallots are a crucial vegetable commodity in Indonesia, playing a vital role in both economic value and nutritional content. With the increasing demand for consumption and onion seeds in the country, the government is forced to import to meet these needs. In an effort to increase the production of shallots, the use of biochar and kieserit fertilizer is the main concern in this study.

Understanding Biochar and Kieserit Fertilizer

Biochar is a black charcoal produced from the biomass heating process in limited oxygen conditions. Its function as a soil improvement can help increase the potassium (K) content in the soil, which plays an important role in the growth and production of onion plants. Meanwhile, Kieserit fertilizer contains important nutrients needed by onion plants to increase the aroma, size, and taste of tubers.

Methodology

This study aims to examine the effect of the provision of various sources of BioChar and Kieseit fertilizer on the growth and production of shallots (Allium ascalonicum L.) which are planted in paddy fields. The location of the study was conducted in Medan Selayang District, with a height of about 25 meters above sea level, taking place from April to July 2018. The method used in this study was a factorial randomized group design with two factors.

Factors and Treatment Combinations

The first factor is the source of Biochar consisting of three types, namely B1 (rice husk), B2 (rice straw), and B3 (oil palm empty bunches) with a dose of 10 tons/ha each. The second factor is the dose of Kieserit fertilizer consisting of four levels, namely K0 (0 g/plot), K1 (5 g/plot), K2 (10 g/plot), and K3 (15 g/plot). From these two factors, 12 combinations of treatment were tested.

Results and Discussion

The results of statistical analysis show that the provision of various sources of Biochar has a significant effect on plant height at the ages of 7 and 8 weeks after planting (MST), the number of puppies at the ages of 3 and 7 MST, and dry weight of tubers per sample. On the other hand, the treatment with Kiesertu fertilizer does not show a significant effect on all observed parameters.

Optimal Treatment Combination

It can be concluded that the administration of rice straw biochar is the best treatment, while kiesert fertilizer at a dose of 15 g/plot is the most effective treatment in that context.

Conclusion

Increasing the use of biochar in agriculture can be a solution to increase soil fertility and productivity of shallots. Biochar has the potential to improve soil structure, increase water retention, and optimize the availability of nutrients. Thus, this study shows the importance of the selection of BioChar sources and the use of appropriate fertilizer to support the growth and production of onion plants in paddy fields, and can reduce dependence on the import of shallots in the future.

With the right combination between BioChar and fertilizer, farmers are expected to increase the harvest of shallots, provide economic benefits, and meet the needs of community consumption on a sustainable manner.
