Student Perception of Film Platforms on Smartphones: A Quantitative Descriptive Study of USU FISIP Students

Introduction

The rapid advancement of technology has revolutionized the way people consume media, particularly in the younger generation. The widespread use of smartphones has made it easier for people to access various forms of multimedia content, including films, at any time and place. This study aims to explore the views of FISIP University students of the University of North Sumatra regarding the use of film platforms on smartphones. The study employed a quantitative descriptive method to gather data from a sample of 97 students, using a questionnaire and library research methods.

Methodology

The research population consisted of USU FISIP students in 2016 to 2019, totaling 3,316 people. The samples taken amounted to 97 students, determined using the Taro Yamane formula with 10% precision and a confidence level of 90%. The sampling technique used was stratified random sampling and purposive sampling. Data collection was carried out through a questionnaire (field research) and the library research method. Descriptive method allows researchers to explain the situation and events without testing hypotheses or making predictions. For data analysis, researchers used a single table analysis with the help of the Statistical Product and System Solution (SPSS) version 26.0.

Results

The results showed that USU FISIP students were generally active users of film platforms on smartphones. From various platforms, Netflix and Hooq appeared as the most widely used. There are several reasons that make students choose these platforms, including ease of access, various variations of films, economical costs, and flexibility both in terms of place and time. USU FISIP students show high enthusiasm for watching movies on smartphones, and they feel that the film platform is very easy to watch their activities.
