Introduction

Calcium silicate materials have been widely used in various industrial applications due to their excellent physical and mechanical properties. However, the development of these materials is often limited by their low porosity, which can affect their performance and durability. In this study, we investigate the effect of adding CMC as a template on the porosity of calcium silicate material.

Materials and Methods

The synthesis of calcium silicate material was carried out by reacting a glass of water with CMC solution, followed by the addition of CaCl2. The resulting material was then heated at 900 ° C for 4 hours before characterization. The characterization of the material was done using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). The porosity of the material was analyzed using the BET method.

Results

The results of the XRD analysis showed the presence of diffraction peaks from dicalcium silicate (Ca2SIO4) and Wollastonite (Casio3) for calcium silicate without templates. Meanwhile, for calcium silicate that uses 2.5%CMC, Wollastonite and Pseudowollastonite (Casio3) were detected. In calcium silicate that uses 5%CMC, the analysis showed the presence of dicalcium silicate and wollastonite. The FT-IR analysis showed the presence of groups of Si-O-si, Si-O-Ca, and Si-Oh, which indicates the existence of calcium silicate material.

The results of the BET analysis showed a significant difference in the porosity of the material depending on the CMC concentration used. For calcium silicate without templates, the average pore size, pore volume, and surface area were 2,068 Nm, 0.0428 cc/g, and 100,898 m²/g, respectively. Meanwhile, calcium silicate with CMC 2.5% had an average pore size of 2.11 Nm, pore volume of 0.0951 cc/g, and surface area of 101,637 m²/g. For calcium silicate that uses 5%CMC, the average pore size increased to 2.41 Nm, the pore volume reached 0.1201 cc/g, and the surface area increased to 112,784 m²/g.

Discussion

The results of this study show that the addition of CMC as a template has a positive effect on increasing the porosity of calcium silicate material. The increase in pore volume and surface area obtained by adding CMC indicates that CMC not only acts as a template but can also contribute to the process of forming a better micro-structure. The role of CMC as a binding agent and forming gel also allows the creation of smoother and evenly distributed pores, which are important in the application of this material in the field of construction and industry.

The material with higher porosity tends to have better physical and mechanical properties, including resistance to loads and cracks. Therefore, the addition of CMC as a template can be a useful method to improve the properties of calcium silicate material.
