Introduction

Palm oil is one of Indonesia's leading commodities, with a very rapid growth rate. In addition to the high production of palm oil, oil palm factory waste is also very abundant. In recent years, the use of polymers and composite materials has increased in various fields, including in the protective equipment industry. The use of sustainable materials has become a crucial aspect in the development of protective equipment, as it not only reduces environmental impacts but also creates innovative products that are beneficial to the community.

The Need for Strong and Lightweight Protective Equipment

Rafting helmets not only function as head protectors, but must also be able to absorb collisions well to protect its users. The design and quality of the helmet become an important aspect that must be considered, especially related to the strength and resistance of the material used. The essence of the helmet protection mechanism is its ability to absorb the energy of the momentum received from various directions.

Materials and Methods

The Use of Powder-Based Composite Material

In this study, the material used consists of powder powder composites, resins, polyurethane, and catalysts. Before the rafting helmet is produced, research is conducted to understand the characteristics of the material so that it is in accordance with the geometric structure of the designed helmet. By utilizing the superiority of the chemical properties of powder powder which is rich in nutrients, this study aims to improve the physical and chemical properties of helmet material.

The Free-Falling Impact Test

The results showed that the most optimal composition of composite material was obtained in ratio 1, with the results of the bending strength testing reaching 44.49 MPa. In addition, the results of the free-falling impact test conducted at an altitude of 1.5 meters indicate the ability of the helmet to absorb the impact energy. In the tests conducted on three sides of the helmet-up, side, and front-the energy absorbed by each helmet is recorded as follows: 384.94 J, 235,007 J, and 289.73 J. This data shows that the rafting helmet made from this material has a good toughness in absorbing collisions, making it an effective protective tool.

The use of raw materials from oil palm factory waste, such as pofa powder, not only provides benefits in terms of material strength, but also contributes to waste reduction. This is in line with the principle of sustainable development which is the focus of many countries, including Indonesia. By utilizing waste as raw material, industry can not only reduce environmental impacts, but also creates innovative products that are beneficial to the community.

In addition, the resistance of rafting helmets made of composite foam polymers shows that the material can be relied upon in extreme situations, such as accidents during rafting activities. This is very important because users' safety is a top priority in the design of protective equipment.

Thus, this research not only contributes to the development of helmet material, but also shows the great potential of the use of industrial waste, especially in the protective equipment industry. Rafting helmets made from PoFA powder composite foam polymers can be one of the innovative solutions in improving safety during open activities.
