The majority of men in Indonesia first tried to smoke at the age of 12-13 years, while women at the age of 14-15 years. The Importance of Knowledge in Shaping Smoking Behavior

The level of knowledge is one of the important factors that affects smoking behavior in students. Lack of knowledge about the dangers of smoking is one of the causes of students to start smoking. They consider cigarettes as a tool to find pleasure and can eliminate fatigue and stress. However, in fact, smoking can cause various diseases, such as lung cancer, which is one of the main causes of death related to cancer in the United States. Therefore, it is essential to educate students about the dangers of smoking to prevent them from starting this harmful habit.

Methodology

Research Design and Sampling

This study uses a descriptive method with a latitude cut design. Sampling was carried out with a simple random sampling technique that meets inclusion criteria. The research data was obtained directly from the subject using a questionnaire. The data was then analyzed using the SPSS computer program. The sample size was 100 high school students from Harapan 3 Medan, North Sumatra.

Results

Level of Knowledge about Smoking Hazards

The results showed that the level of knowledge of smoking hazards in high school students 3 Medan was in the good category, with 67 out of 100 respondents (67.0%) had good knowledge about the dangers of smoking. This indicates that most of the students have a good understanding of the risks associated with smoking.

Attitude towards the Dangers of Smoking

Meanwhile, the attitude towards the dangers of smoking is in a positive category, with 98 out of 100 respondents (98.0%) having a positive attitude towards the dangers of smoking. This suggests that the students have a favorable view of the dangers of smoking and are likely to avoid smoking.

Smoking Behavior

Finally, smoking behavior in high school students of Harapan 3 Medan is in the category of non-smoking, with 86 out of 100 respondents (86.0%) not smoking. This is a positive finding, indicating that most of the students have not started smoking.

Discussion

Implications of the Findings

The results of this study indicate that most of the high school students of Harapan 3 Medan have good knowledge about the dangers of smoking and positive attitudes towards the dangers of smoking. This is a positive thing and shows that educational efforts about the dangers of smoking have produced results. However, keep in mind that there are still some students who do not understand the dangers of smoking or even still smoking.

Recommendations for Future Research

Therefore, it is necessary to make more intensive and structured educational efforts to increase the knowledge and attitudes of students about the dangers of smoking. Educational efforts can be done through various ways, such as counseling, seminars, and anti-smoking campaigns. In addition, the role of parents and teachers is very important in providing examples and support to students so that they can avoid smoking.

By increasing knowledge and attitudes about the dangers of smoking, it is expected to reduce the number of smokers among students and maintain the health of the younger generation. This study highlights the importance of education in preventing smoking among young people and provides recommendations for future research and interventions.
