Introduction

Vegetative growth of cocoa seeds (Theobroma cacao L.) is a crucial factor in the development of cocoa plantations. The growth of cocoa seeds is influenced by various factors, including the use of organic fertilizers and proper watering. This study aims to examine the effect of administering vermicompos and water with different field capacities on the growth of cocoa seeds. The study was conducted in the Greenhouse of the USU Faculty of Agriculture at a height of about 25 meters above sea level, taking place from November 2012 to February 2013.

Methodology

This study uses a random factorial group design with two main factors. The first factor is the Vermicompos dose (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% of the planting media) and the second factor is the provision of water with varying field capacity (100%, 75%, 50%, and 25%). Observed parameters include seed height, stem diameter, total leaf area, seed wet weight, dry weight of seeds, root wet weight, root length, root dry weight, and water use efficiency.

Results

The results showed that the administration of vermicompos had a significant effect on the height of the seeds, stem diameter, total leaf area, the wet weight of the seeds, the dry weight of the seeds, the root wet weight, the dry weight of the root, and the efficiency of water use. That is, the higher the vermicompos dose given, the better the growth of cocoa seeds. This is caused by the rich organic nutritional content in Vermicompos, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which is needed for plant growth and development.

Giving water also has a significant effect on the height of the seeds, the diameter of the stem, total leaf area, the wet weight of the seeds, the wet weight of the roots, and the efficiency of water use. The more water is given, the better the growth of cocoa seeds. This shows that water is an important factor in the process of photosynthesis and plant growth.

However, the interaction between vermicompos and water does not show a significant effect on the observed growth parameters. This means that although vermicompos and water play an important role in the growth of cocoa seeds, the combination of the two does not provide a real synergistic effect.
