The Effect of Metallurgical Mixing Method on Micro Structure, Mechanical Properties, and Electrical Conductivity (Cuni) - 5WT.%MO - 4WT.%SIC

In the industrial sector, electrical discharge machine (EDM) is one of the most widely used non-traditional cutting methods, mainly because of its ability to work on very hard conductive materials. The process of cutting EDM is very dependent on the electrodes used. An ideal EDM electrode must have several characteristics, including high melting points, good electrical conductivity, high density, good thermal conductivity, ease of processing, and low costs. However, one type of material alone cannot meet all of these requirements. Therefore, this study examines the characteristics of the alloy (cuni)-5WT.% Mo-4WT.% SIC as EDM Electrodes using three variations of powder metallurgical mixing methods: Horizontal Milling, V-Mixer, and Mechanical Alloying.

In this study, we investigated the effect of three different mixing methods on the properties of the cuni alloy. The results show that the mechanical alloying method produces specimens with the best mechanical properties, including high density, hardness, and electrical conductivity.

The mechanical alloying method is known to produce fine particles and distribute materials evenly, which allows for better binding during the sintering process. This method produces specimens with a density of 5.65 gr/cm³, hardness of 65.1 VHN, and maximum voltage at a load of 20 tons reaches 387.42 MPa. The electrical conductivity was recorded at 3.590 × 10⁷ to M, and the crystal size reached 24.68 Nm. These results indicate that the mechanical alloying method is effective in producing high-quality materials with desired properties.

Horizontal Milling and V-Mixer Methods: A Comparison

In contrast to the mechanical alloying method, the horizontal milling and V-mixer methods produce specimens with lower mechanical properties. The density of the specimens produced by these methods is lower than that of the mechanical alloying method, and the hardness and electrical conductivity are also lower. These results suggest that the horizontal milling and V-mixer methods are not as effective as the mechanical alloying method in producing high-quality materials.
