Introduction

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is one of the most significant global health threats, accounting for millions of deaths worldwide each year. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 17 million people died from heart disease and blood vessels in 2019. In Indonesia, the incidence of heart disease and blood vessels has been increasing year by year, with at least 15 out of 1000 people, or around 2,784,064 individuals, suffering from heart disease. Coronary heart disease is influenced by various risk factors, which are divided into two categories: risk factors that cannot be modified such as gender, ethnicity, and age, as well as modified risk factors such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, obesity, lack of physical activity, diabetes mellitus, Smoking habits, and poor eating patterns.

The Importance of Understanding Coronary Heart Disease

Understanding the knowledge of students in the field of medicine about coronary heart disease is very important, considering they will become medical personnel who can contribute to the prevention and handling of heart disease in the future. Medical students who have a good understanding of coronary heart disease can provide better care and treatment to patients, which can lead to better health outcomes. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate the level of knowledge of students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra, stambuk 2019 regarding coronary heart disease.

Research Methodology

This study aims to determine the level of knowledge of students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra (USU) stambuk 2019 regarding coronary heart disease. The research conducted is a descriptive study, which is to observe the level of student knowledge about coronary heart disease. The data collected is primary data, obtained directly from respondents through the distribution of questionnaires to the research sample. This questionnaire is designed to assess student knowledge about risk factors, symptoms, and handling of coronary heart disease.

Research Results

The results showed that most active students had a high level of knowledge (79.0%) about coronary heart disease. A good level of knowledge about the risk factor of this disease is certainly very useful for rapid and appropriate diagnosis, so that patients can receive optimal treatment. The high level of knowledge of USU Faculty of Medicine students on coronary heart disease shows that the medical education curriculum in this institution has provided a good foundation for students to understand and recognize risk factors for heart disease.

Analysis and Implications

The high level of knowledge of USU Faculty of Medicine students on coronary heart disease has positive implications for the community. Students who are equipped with good knowledge about coronary heart disease can be more active in providing education to patients and the wider community regarding prevention, early detection, and management of this disease. With these efforts, it is expected that the incidence of coronary heart disease in Indonesia can be reduced in the future.

Conclusion

Overall, the level of knowledge of students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra, stambuk 2019 on coronary heart disease shows encouraging results. With this good knowledge, it is hoped that they can contribute greater in efforts to handle and prevent heart disease in the community. This research is the first step to evaluate and improve the medical education curriculum in educating a generation of future doctors who are competent and knowledgeable about heart health.
