The study was conducted in the Agricultural Extension Academy (APP) trial garden, located at a height of 32 meters above sea level, with a duration of six months from November 1999 to April 2000. The primary objective of this research was to determine the optimal period of planting red chili in the spill system with shallots, without inhibiting the growth and yield of shallots. Additionally, the study aimed to explore whether more intensive fertilization in the spill system could increase yields of both onions and red chili.

The study employed a random factorial group design with two main factors: Tumpangsari (T) and System fertilizing (P). Three types of TPSPANGSARI system treatment were included:

Results

The results showed that the onion spill system with red chili 42 days after planting onion produced the highest wet harvest weight of onion tubers (74.29 g tan-1). Meanwhile, the highest red chili harvest weight was obtained in the spill system with the same planting.

These findings indicate that planting red chili 42 days after planting shallots has the potential to increase land efficiency with optimal shallot harvest. This is because shallots have been strong enough and have passed the critical phase of growth, so planting red chili does not inhibit the growth and yield of shallots.
