Experimental Design and Parameters Observed

This study used a factorial random group design with two factors: watering pattern and variety of cayenne pepper. The first factor was a watering pattern divided into three groups: watering once a day, once every three days, and once every five days. The second factor was the variety of cayenne pepper tested, namely Sigantung, Genie, Hanna 08, and Wijaya, with each variety repeated four times. The parameters observed in this study included plant height, number of leaves, root wet weight, rooted dry weight, flowering age, bearing age, fruit weight, number of branches, water content, leaf area, and chlorophyll content A, B, total chlorophyll, and Drought sensitivity index.

Experimental Location and Duration

The research took place at the Greenhouse of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, Medan, from September 2019 to February 2020. The greenhouse provided a controlled environment that allowed for precise management of watering patterns and other experimental conditions.

Research Results

Effect of Watering Patterns on Morphophysiological Parameters

The results showed that the treatment of varieties had a significant effect on parameters such as plant height, number of leaves, root wet weight, root dry weight, fruit weight, number of branches, water content, leaf area, chlorophyll A, chlorophyll B, and total chlorophyll. Nevertheless, the treatment of varieties does not show a significant effect on the age of flowering and the age of fruit. On the other hand, watering patterns have proven to have a significant effect on all measured parameters.

Drought Sensitivity Index

Through the analysis of the index of drought sensitivity, the genie variety is identified as a moderate variety of drought stress, while the Sigantung, Hanna 08, and Wijaya varieties are categorized as varieties that are sensitive to dryness. This discovery is very important given the increasing challenges in agriculture due to climate change and decreased water availability.

Implications for Agricultural Production

From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the selection of appropriate cayenne pepper varieties, as well as managing effective watering patterns, can contribute to plant resilience to drought stress. By understanding the morphysiological varieties of different varieties, farmers and researchers can develop a better strategy to increase agricultural production in increasingly uncertain environmental conditions. This finding provides a basis for further research that can help in the development of cayenne pepper varieties that are more resistant to drought conditions.
