Sleep is a vital component that affects not only physical and emotional growth, but also cognitive functions, including learning and attention. In the context of students, good sleep quality is essential to support the learning process and directly related to their academic performance. However, various factors, including caffeine consumption and certain types of food, can affect the quality of sleep which ultimately has an impact on student health and learning achievement. This study aims to explore the relationship between caffeine consumption and food with sleep quality in Al-Azhar Medan High School students.

Understanding the Importance of Sleep Quality in Students

Sleep is a crucial element that plays a significant role in the development and growth of students. During sleep, the brain processes and consolidates information, and the body repairs and regenerates tissues. Adequate sleep is essential for students to perform well academically, as it improves concentration, memory, and problem-solving skills. Moreover, sleep deprivation can lead to various health problems, including obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

Research Methodology: A Cross-Sectional Study

This study uses an analytic design with a cross-sectional approach to investigate the relationship between caffeine consumption and food with sleep quality in Al-Azhar Medan High School students. The sample was taken using the probability method with a simple random sampling to ensure a fair representation of the population. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire was used to measure student sleep quality, while a food frequency questionnaire (KFM) was employed to identify the types and frequencies of food and drink consumption that students usually take.

The results of this study show that of 100 respondents, as many as 86 people (86%) have poor sleep quality, while only 14 people (14%) have good sleep quality. This study found that consumption of foods and drinks such as coffee, tea, energy drinks, rice, bread, sweet potatoes, noodles, beef, chicken, goat meat, eggs, fish, tempeh, tofu, nuts, full cream milk, cheese, vegetables, fruits, fast food, fried foods, soft drinks, and sweet drinks have a P> 0.05 value, which means there is no significant relationship with sleep quality. Conversely, consumption of vegetable oil, butter, and coconut milk shows the value of P <0.05, which indicates the relationship between the consumption of the three types of food and sleep quality.

Analysis and Discussion: Unpacking the Findings

The results of this study indicate that most students experience sleep disorders, which may be caused by various factors, including eating patterns and caffeine consumption. Although caffeine consumption such as coffee and tea is often associated with increased alertness, this study shows that there is no significant relationship between the consumption of caffeine and student sleep quality. This could be caused by individual tolerance of caffeine or consumption habits that have been integrated in the daily lives of students.

However, a significant relationship between consumption of vegetable oil, butter, and coconut milk with sleep quality shows that the type of fat consumed can affect sleep quality. High saturated fat from butter and coconut milk can increase the risk of sleep disorders, while unsaturated fats from vegetable oils can have a different impact.

This study provides an important insight into the relationship between caffeine consumption and food with student sleep quality in Al-Azhar Medan High School. Consumption of vegetable oils, butter, and coconut milk is directly related to sleep quality, while caffeine consumption and various other types of food do not show significant impacts. Therefore, an increase in awareness of the importance of a balanced diet can help students achieve better sleep quality, which in turn can support their academic success.
